Getting Started

What is blindfold chess training?

Blindfold chess training is a method of practicing chess without looking at the board. You visualize the position in your mind and make moves based on chess notation (like e4, Nf3, etc.). This improves your spatial reasoning, memory, and calculation skills, making you a stronger chess player.

How do I use the coordinate system on the board?

The chess board uses standard algebraic notation. Files are labeled a-h (left to right) and ranks are numbered 1-8 (bottom to top). Each square has a unique coordinate like e4 or d7. The letters below the board and numbers to the right help you identify any square quickly.

Visual Modes

What are the different visual modes?

Normal: Standard chess board with all pieces visible and colored normally.

Black: All pieces appear in black, reducing visual cues and forcing you to rely more on piece shapes and positions.

Checkers: Pieces are simplified to basic shapes, making it harder to distinguish piece types at a glance.

Empty: Pieces become completely invisible, forcing pure mental visualization - the ultimate blindfold training.

Navigation & Controls

How do I navigate through moves in a game?

Use the control buttons below the board:

Go to initial position

Previous move

Next move

Go to final position

You can also click on any move in the moves list to jump directly to that position.

How do I flip the board perspective?

Click the 🔄 flip button in the move controls. This rotates the board 180 degrees so you can practice from Black's perspective. The coordinate notation (letters and numbers) will also flip to match the new perspective.

Puzzle Training

What are tactical puzzles and how do they help?

Tactical puzzles are positions where you need to find the best move or sequence of moves to gain an advantage. They help improve:

Pattern recognition - spotting common tactical motifs

Calculation skills - working out move sequences in your head

Visualization - seeing positions without looking at the board

Speed - making quick tactical decisions

How do I solve puzzles without seeing the board?

Solving puzzles blindfold requires strong visualization skills:

Read the position carefully using algebraic notation

Visualize the board in your mind's eye

Calculate variations mentally before making moves

Use coordinates to track piece movements

Start with simpler puzzles and gradually work up to more complex positions.

What types of tactical patterns should I focus on?

Focus on these fundamental tactical patterns:

Forks - attacking two pieces simultaneously

Pins - restricting piece movement

Skewers - attacking a valuable piece through a less valuable one

Discovered attacks - moving a piece to reveal an attack

Double attacks - creating multiple threats

Deflection - forcing pieces away from key squares

How often should I practice puzzles?

For optimal improvement:

Daily practice - even 10-15 minutes daily is better than long sessions

Quality over quantity - focus on understanding rather than speed

Mix difficulty levels - combine easy puzzles for confidence with challenging ones for growth

Review mistakes - understand why certain moves don't work

Consistency is key to building strong tactical intuition.

Technical Issues

Why can't I see the board or pieces?

This could be due to several reasons:

• Check if you're in Empty visual mode - pieces are intentionally invisible

• Try refreshing the page (Ctrl+F5 or Cmd+Shift+R)

• Make sure JavaScript is enabled in your browser

• Check your internet connection if games aren't loading

Why aren't the games loading?

If games aren't loading:

• Check your internet connection

• Try refreshing the page

• Make sure the server is running (if running locally)

• Check the browser console for error messages (F12 → Console tab)

Can I use this app on mobile devices?

Yes! The app is fully responsive and works on mobile devices. The board and controls will automatically adjust to smaller screens. Touch controls work for piece movement and navigation.

Training Tips

How should I start with blindfold chess training?

Start with these steps:

1. Begin with Normal mode to get familiar with the interface

2. Progress to Black mode to reduce visual dependency

3. Try Checkers mode for more challenge

4. Eventually work up to Empty mode for true blindfold practice

5. Use the coordinate system to help visualize positions

What's the best way to improve my blindfold skills?

• Practice regularly, even just 10-15 minutes daily

• Start with simple positions and gradually increase complexity

• Use the coordinate system to build spatial awareness

• Practice games for pattern recognition

• Don't rush - accuracy is more important than speed initially
